personality Oftentimes cocky and incredibly flirtatious, Captain Jack Harkness is quite the enigma to those who don't know him, and even more so to those who do. He has a tendency to come off incredibly casual and nonchalant, cocky and overconfident, all at the same time, and while he does tend to do what he can to enjoy life, the personality he often portrays is only a fraction of who he really is. Jack is more complex than he seems, and under his oft-amused exterior lies a much more serious, and much darker personality. Jack is a fighter, and while he's fiercely protective and compassionate towards his team, he's willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. Unlike the Doctor, Jack has no qualms with killing the threats that Torchwood encounter, if that's the best course of action, something none of his friend's incarnations have been able to do. However, similar to the Doctor, Jack has a long, mysterious history, and holds tight to guilt he feels over several events of the past, which he blames himself for.
miscellaneous He has evolved human pheremones, which make him naturally attractive, and pleasant smelling to virtually everyone.
history Jack was born in the 51st century, and grew up on the Boeshane Peninsula, with his father, mother, and younger brother, Gray. His childhood wasn't particularly eventful, but it was quite pleasant. His family was always close, and spent a good deal of time together, playing games, and camping out, singing songs, etc. All of that changed, however, when his home was invaded by an unknown hostile race. Jack's father told him to take Gray, and run and hide, hoping the two boys would be safe, and Jack did as he was told, holding tight to his brother's hand as they fled together. As they ran, though, Gray stumbled, and Jack let go of his hand, continuing on, assuming his brother would be right behind him. Eventually he returned home, hoping to find his family, especially his brother, waiting there, but all he returned to was his father's corpse. The next several years of his life were spent looking for his brother, but to no avail. To date, that was the worst day in his life.
Years later, Jack joined up with the Time Agency, the first from his home to ever do so, and spent years working for them, until one day he woke up with a gaping two year hole in his memory. He went rogue at that point, becoming a con artist, and hoping to someday recover the years that the Agency stole from him. It was actually during one of his many cons, that he met the Doctor, in his ninth incarnation. The Time Lord saved Jack's life and took him on as a companion, in addition to Rose. During their time together, they had some absolutely fabulous adventures, which were all cut short by an attack by the Daleks. The attack left Jack dead, the Doctor facing certain death, and Rose stranded in her own time with a TARDIS she couldn't operate. She managed to tap into the pure power of the Time Vortex, though, and brought Jack back to life, as well as defeated the army of Daleks. Her lack of control over the vortex's powers led to a peculiar side effect for Jack, though. From that day on, he was unable to die. Or, more accurately, he would die, but he couldn't stay dead.
As of right now, he's running Torchwood Three in Cardiff, with his own hand-picked team, consisting of Dr. Owen Harper, Toshiko Sato, Ianto Jones, and Gwen Cooper.

"What've you got for me, Tosh?" the faux captain demanded as he strode into the central hub of Torchwood Three, coat billowing behind him. God, he loved that coat, it gave him such a presence, especially when he was moving quickly. But, there were more important matters at hand right now, like the sudden spike in rift activity. "Only one missing persons report filed within the last month, and alien activity has been down...even the weevils," was the response he got back from Tosh as she typed away at her computer, scanning through the data they'd collected.
Normally, these things would be taken as good news; less aliens and less missing persons normally meant the area was safe...but coupled with the massive spike in energy coming from the rift, well, it just compounded the mystery of the whole ordeal. Raking his hands through his dark hair, Jack shook his head. They were missing something, they had to be. Giving a nod towards Tosh, he turned on his heel, crossing the hub, wracking his brain. Maybe they just didn't have enough data? "Gwen!" he barked out, seemingly startling the woman who had been pouring over the recent police reports she'd managed to get from her friend down at the station, Andy. "Tell me you've got something," he borderline pleaded with the brunette, leaning down to attempt to read over her shoulder. Her response was a negative also; even the police were experience an unusual calm patch. Not that crime rates were particularly high in the area, but they had been extraordinarily low lately.
Gritting his teeth slightly, he nodded, before stalking off further into the depths of the Torchwood facility, back to the room he'd claimed as his, dropping into the chair, and leaning both elbows on the desk, resting his forehead in his hands. Times like this, he wished the Doctor would make an appearance. Not that his team couldn't handle themselves, but it would just cut down on the frustration of sitting around, waiting for whatever was causing these disturbances to rear its ugly head.
